Chapter 8 – Clementine's Potential

That afternoon Waren and Aiden found the others in their usual yurts for meditation. They yanked the doors open and pulled them both out. They were desperate to tell them what happened, but they needed a more secluded place to discuss the news and what to do next. Promising them that they needed to hear the news from them first, they led them down the streets away from the training ground, looking for an empty place to talk.

It seemed the streets were filling more by the minute. Everyone was leaving their usual daily activities to tell the story of what had happened. The group wound their way through the people, eventually finding a little seclusion in a garden between two yurts. It was obviously a public garden, with rows of flowers and sitting areas dispersed throughout. Hummingbird feeders were placed among the flowers, attracting several hummingbirds to hover around them. It would have felt like a more beautiful place had it not been for their current circumstances.

On the far end of the garden was an unusual structure; it looked like organ pipes, but there was no organ console. There were many hollow pipes jutting out of the ground in various lengths and sizes, and standing in front of them was an air elemental. He was facing the pipes, touching different ones with his hand. Every time he touched a pipe, a gust of wind would flow through it, making it play like an organ would. He quickly touched several pipes in succession, and a pretty melody resonated out of the pipes. Waren was grateful he was playing. As they talked their conversation could be hidden by the pipe music in the background.

The group made their way deeper into the garden and settled on a bench as far away from the entrance as possible. Aiden immediately jumped into the story of what happened in the courtroom with the masters. She explained what a mystborn was, how the mystborn Jackie had a message from a mystery master, and how the air masters obviously showed no interest in helping with the dark myst below. They were too comfortable in their little Sky Plaza to risk anything to help the non elementals down below. In addition, they had no problem handing over the Angiolumin in order to save their own skins.

After hearing all of this, Denzel asked, “Well, what do we do now? If there is no air master willing to help, then the Angiolumin is worthless to us. It needs four masters to open it.”

“Didn’t someone say there are other air masters? Can’t we find one of them?” Aiden wondered.

Waren waved his hand dismissively. “They said that the other masters are abroad and no one knows where they are. Unless something changes, I don’t think that they’re an option.”

Clementine clutched her little paper crane tighter in her hand. She was an air elemental. If only she could become a master fast enough. Her heart was in the right place. She wouldn’t want to be a master for the power or glory.
